A study of the characteristics of slot waveguides in broadband networks
Summary:
Subject of this thesis is the slot waveguide and its characteristics. We give
brief description of traditional waveguides that confine light inside a
higher-refractive-index core. Then we demonstrate the ability of slot waveguide
to guide light wave through a lower-refractive-index slot. This comes against
the nature of light always preferring higher-refractive-index materials. Thus,
we analyze polarization, the transverse electromagnetic nature of plane waves,
the transverse modes, as well as the various types of transmission modes.
Maxwell equations and the discontinuity between areas of different index
explain mathematically the function of slot waveguides. These principals are
the result of applied forces and transmission modes. The method we follow is an
analysis on mathematical ground. Focusing on the applied forces we discover the
type of force –attractive or repulsive- depending on the type of transmission
mode. Change the mode, then force is to change. We check also the molecular and
structural level, the special design and structural techniques. We focus on
applications of such waveguides as optical sensors or in the field
Optomechanics. At last we present R-Soft: A simulation tool capable to design
optics and various slot waveguides. Conclusively slot waveguides are the future
of optics and maybe of satellite technologies.
