NO2 measurements over Athens using MAX-DOAS technique
Summary:
Measurements using the MAX-DOAS (Multi Axis Differential Optical Absorption
Spectroscopy) technique have been carried out for the first time at the urban
site of Athens. In this work, NO2 slant column (SC) densities were retrieved
and analysed for the time period from October 2012 to March 2013. The
measurement site is located in National Observatory of Athens, Penteli, at a
500 m altitude. NO2 SC densities were obtained for eight different azimuth
angles and for eight elevation angles. The results provide an overview of the
horizontal distribution of NO2 over Athens. A rough estimation of the vertical
distribution is also attempted. The MAX-DOAS measurements were compared to
in-situ measurements from 11 ground based stations in order to evaluate the
range of the instrument and the spatial homogeneity of the results.
