Summary:
Everyday, students read various labels of nutritional products, showing, among
others, the metals and trace elements they contain. However, students actually
know little about the effect of metals and trace elements and how important
they are for the proper functioning of the human organism.
The purpose of this study was to examine the biological role of metals and
trace elements in the human organism and present a teaching proposal, where
basic concepts of Chemistry and Biology will be taught, based on the role of
these chemical elements. Another purpose was to help students understand the
value of a proper and balanced diet.
To write the theoretical part, we were based on greek and international
bibliography and our main purpose was to record the most important biological
roles of metals and trace elements, as long as the diseases caused by lack or
excess, in order to highlight their importance in the diet of modern man.
In the formation of the proposed lesson plans and the project, we used the
following teaching methods: monologue, along with the guided discovery and
group cooperative learning.
Finally, we propose five lesson plans and a project, where we present chemical
concepts, such as osmosis, chemical reaction, redox, complexes and the action
of catalysts, through the biological role of metals and traces. The lesson
plans can be used in the teaching process of Chemistry and Biology in the
first, second and third grade of high school.
