Feedback controlled city metabolism model
Summary:
The Urban Metabolism studies a number of issues in order to ensure a
sustainable development of a community. The Urban Metabolism follows the
material and energy flows and their impact on social, economic and
environmental potential of a region. One of the important outputs is the Solid
Waste because it affects significantly on the quality of the community
environment.
Waste management and especially integrated waste management is one of the most
important factors affecting the sustainable development of a region. The
removal and waste management are among the most topical issues facing modern
societies and one of the important issues that community services have to face.
Proper organization of an integrated waste management system is a basic
requirement for modern communities, because the lack of planning leads to an
increase in management costs and a deterioration of the urban environment. It
is necessary to design an integrated waste management system, because it leads
to the rational and economically advantageous garbage routing. it is important
to find the right place for deposition and management of waste. To make this
possible, it is important to make precise estimates of the waste quantities in
a region within a time interval.
For the prediction of the quantities (waste volumes) and the intensity of the
waste odor, there is a major influence of demographic, economic and social
factors. The economic potential of the citizens of a city, their economic
activity and the culture of the people influence significantly the production
of the waste. Mathematical models related to these factors can estimate the
volume of generated municipal waste.
In this work, these factors were analyzed how they affect the waste generation,
creating mathematical models using these indicators. Based on these models,
estimations and forecasts of the aforementioned values are made, while
comparisons with actual measurements and corrections of the mathematical models
were made too.
