The Earthquake of Kefalonia and the Contribution of the Armed Forces in This
Summary:
The research discuss about the overall contribution of the Greek army, after
the serious damages caused
by the catastrophic double earthquake that took place in Kefalonia, during the
26th of
January and 3rd of February in 2014. Even if the event caused only property and
material
damage, like road and other historical and national building destruction, the
negative
impact was tremendous for the population and the island itself. As a result the
cooperation
between different security groups and National Organizations was necessary.
After the
instructions given by the state, “Xenokratis Plan”, the local and the National
authorities
worked together in an effective way. Needless to say that the presence of the
National
Army was extremely helpful.
In the present research first we mention the material damage caused in schools,
churches, houses and other buildings. Then we focus on the contribution of the
Greek
Army in detail. The staff supplied food and a place to stay on the population
affected by
the earthquake. Then the roads and the local transportation restored with the
use of
specialized equipment. Furthermore, we mention all the difficulties they had to
overcome
in order to complete their mission in Kefalonia. To conclude, we propose some
methods
and measures the State can take in advance, in order to protect the population,
under
similar circumstances. What we should mention is that the people seriously
affected by the
catastrophic event could not erase easily the traumatic memories. However the
Greek
Army helped them with restoration plans to get back to normal life sooner.
