Economic analysis of the internet market
Summary:
In this Master thesis, the Internet market is outlined, examining its
structure, its business model, the competition issues and the regulatory
policies. It is also described the ecosystem of the Internet of Things. In the
first chapter, there is an overview of the internet structure, which has
changed significantly, mainly due to the fact that the number of terminals
systems has increased. The characteristics of the industry are also described
so as to compose the model "Structure - Conduct - Performance” and
subsequently, to measure the intensity of competition. Moreover, the regulatory
policy affects this particular model and the diffusion of bandwidth-intense
applications have raised concerns about the adequateness of the current
infrastructure to cope with the ever expanding demand. As a result, it raises
the question which policy best serves the incentives for investment for both
the ISPs and content providers. Subsequently, different regulatory models are
proposed based on foreign literature. Finally, the ecosystem of Internet of
Things is evaluated, since it is the current trend in which the Internet will
maintain the vital role as a global backbone for information sharing and
interconnection of physical objects in a wide range of technologies.
