Summary:
The present paper refers to the examination of the difficulties faced by first
year undergraduate students of the Department of Mathematics of the National
and Kapodistrian University of Athens during their transition from secondary to
tertiary education. The focus is on students that have attended the course of
Calculus.The research is a case study of the students who were investigated
successively from the beginning until the end of the semester through
questionnaires and interviews. The results of the research revealed
difficulties faced by undergraduate students regarding the content of the
module and the social and academic context. Additionally,the research suggests
a categorization of the ways adopted by students for the tackling of the
problems encountered in University during their transition.
