Summary:
Road traffic accidents is a problem with severe social and financial
consequences, not only in Greece but worldwide. It seems that driving while
intoxicated is a common practice for the Greeks. The investigation of the
aetiological factors has special importance, as it can contribute significantly
to the prevention of traffic accidents. Alcohol is one of the main factors and
it has gained great attention for years. Driving under the influence of other
psychotropic substances and drugs is also a problem of increasing concern,
especially over the escalating use of the licit and illicit drugs.
The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology of the University of Athens
is authorized to perform the toxicological investigation of traffic accidents
that happen in the major part of Greece. Especially the last two years it
performs investigation exclusively for fatal traffic accidents.
This study aims to find the frequency of use of alcohol, drugs and other
psychotropic substances by the victims of fatally road traffic accidents. For
this purpose we examined data for a period of one year (June 2010-May 2011).
Additional information were provided from the police stations. The findings of
the toxicological analyses are classified according to the alcohol
concentration and the kind of psychotropic substance and drug detected. At the
same time findings were classified and correlated according to the gender, the
age, the kind of victim (driver/co-driver/pedestrian), the area and the kind of
road and the date of accident (month, day of the week, hour).
The first part of the findings refers to epidemiological characteristics of
road traffic accidents. The second part analyses the findings especially for
alcohol, drugs and psychotropic substances, and the correlations among them.
The last part correlates all the findings above, in order to come to
conclusions regarding to the situation in Greece, the recent trends and to make
suggestions for minimizing this problem.
