Prime numbers have early attracted attention and have constituted a special
theoretical unity since the beginnings of Mathematics in Ancient Greece. This
paper attempts to present historical key results of the Theory from the entire
route. Emphasis is given on the use of elements of the theory of prime numbers
in sectors such as Cryptography, always in relation to the study of purely
algebraic structures.
