The example and the counterexample in teaching and understanding mathematics
Summary:
In the present thesis we study the role of the example and the counterexample
in mathematics’ teaching process and their contribution in the evolution of
mathematics. Through the prism of an historical study of mathematics we study
how much a ‘parallelism’ of the two processes, the process of mathematics
education and the process of the evolution of mathematics in time, could
contribute in a deeper understanding of learning disabilities and also help the
students overcome obstacles in the path of knowledge. To be able to study the
amount of contribution of an historical parallelism it is important to find
common features of the two processes, something that we could say that is a
clue for positive parallelism, or differences which conclude to negative
parallelism. Finally we present some suggestions and ways of how the history
of mathematics could be a useful tool in the process of mathematics’ teaching.
