Mapping Frost phenomena using gis and remote sensing techniques and compilation of an action plan for civil protection in the area of central Sterea Hellas, Greece
Summary:
Capturing the distribution of frost on a map is an arduous process; however it
is a tool that could be utilized in risk aversion by either local authorities
or at a national level. The risk frost imposes is the result of a multifactor
equation. One of the omnipresent factors is human intervention. When frost is
on the slope of a mountain it can be beneficial, however if covering roads
should be treated as hazardous to human life. Another example of the
destructive nature of frost is the destruction of crops, also having economic
ramifications.
The deliverable of this study is a risk map of frost in the selected
geographical area of central Sterea Hellas. The study’s results could be
further utilized in taking protective measures. The focus of the study will be
placed on the road network and around it. The methodology of the mapping will
be based on four tools: the GIS, the Remote Sensing, the meteorological data
and data of the paid damages of agricultural land. Each one will bring a new
layer of understanding. They will be complementary to each other, producing the
deliverable.
