Spatial and temporal variations of heavy metals in the marine area affected by the discharge of processed sewage from Psitalia (Inner Saronikos Gulf)
Summary:
This thesis took place at the Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry of the
University of Athens in the framework of the program ΑΡΙΣΤΕΙΑ ISMET-COMAREN 640
(ΚΕ 11903) The goal of this thesis was to study the burden of the Inner Saronic
Gulf by heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn). These metals were examined in
the year 2014 in specific positions of the Saronic Gulf. Moreover, the metal
concentrations from 1986 until 2012 were also gathered. The pollution
originating from the waste treatment facility of Psytalia was studied as well
as the spatial, seasonal and in depth variation of heavy metals. All the data
(1986-2014) collected were statistically processed with the SPSS software and
the temporal evolution trend in metal concentrations was investigated. The
sampling stations that were chosen are representative of the impact of the
Psytalia waste treatment facility on heavy metal concentrations. In this study
the major results and conclusions are presented. Generally, we have observed
systematic reduction of the heavy metal levels. Additionally, after the start
of the biological treatment process, higher concentrations of certain metals
were observed at the station which is near the waste treatment facility of
Psytalia.
