Χωρική και Χρονική Μεταβολή της Νεφοκάλυψης στον Ελληνικό Χώρο

Summary:
The subject of the present thesis is the study of the spatial and temporal
variation of cloudiness in the Hellenic territory.
The knowledge of all of the cloudiness parameters is an extremely important
tool for climatologists , meteorologists and for all the scientists and
researchers who occupy themselves with the scientific study of climate and
weather in general.
The understanding of cloudiness also provides answers as to the way the solar
radiation reaches the ground surface and as to the energy amount that emits
from the ground toward space. The result of the latter is the cloudiness effect
on air temperature.
Furthermore , the understanding of the spatial-temporal variation of
cloudiness is closely linked to the way clouds are formed. What is
characteristic is that in specific times of the year we observe specific types
of clouds. In order to extract concrete results, clouds are primarily
classified in specific categories ,the distinction between which is based on
two criteria, the height in which clouds are at and secondly the shape they
present. What follows is the measurement of cloudiness in eighths. That means
that zero eighths correspond to a perfectly clear sky. On the contrary , eight
eighths correspond to a sky fully covered by clouds.
The data of the present thesis come from the National Meteorological
Service and were obtained by 19 meteorological stations, during the period
1955-2001. The careful evaluation of thus received data helped create detailed
maps and led to extract conclusions concerning the cloudiness deployment
throughout the Hellenic territory.
