Summary:
In this thesis we are studied study the representations of middle and high
school students (ages 13-17 year old) have been studied through painting. The
students were asked to paint that comes to their minds about the chemical
element, chemical compound, and the chemical reaction.
The paintings are a way to reveal ideas of students, without being shame or
anxious for their answers. Moreover, it is an alternative way to elicit
students’ ideas, as students’ drawings reflect clearly, directly and without
bias ideas that have in their mind.
A group of 220 questionnaires in total were collected and analyzed to create
categories (open coding) and their interconnection (axial coding). Statistical
analysis was performed with the program SPSS.
Among others, the main results showed that students depicted submicroscopic
representation in a greater extent. More specifically, a high percentage of
students represent chemical elements and chemical compounds drawing particulate
spheres (same or different). Students depict chemical reactions both
macroscopic (e.g. fire) and submicroscopic (particle representation of
reactions). A few students provide symbolic representations by their paintings.
The results of this survey can be used by teachers in order to help their
students to connect their knowledge in chemistry at three levels: macroscopic,
submicroscopic and symbolic. Moreover, the painting is for students a pleasant
task stimulates, causes thinking in order to portray their ideas and gives the
teacher an insight into the ideas of his students.
