Summary:
The present study refers to a quantitative morphometric analysis of the deltaic
salience of the Acheloos river, in the southwestern Aetolia-Acarnania. The
major geological features of this region are fully described, namely the
lithological structure, the seismicity, tectonics and hydrogeology. In
addition, the hydrological data of the river basin are thoroughly
investigated. An attempt to identify and determine the bioclimate of this
deltaic area is made, based on available data from the meteorological stations
of Agrinion and Mesologion. For the implementation of the methodology of the
morphometric analysis the software ArcGIS 10 is adopted, with the aid of which
most of the morphometric parameters were computed. The findings of this
analysis are in accordance with the so far consideration of the Acheloos delta
as a Rhone – type one. Nevertheless, the special and unique differentiations of
the area are reflected in the resulting values of both direct and indirect
morphometric parameters.
