Summary:
The technology of portable electronic devices is advancing rapidly lately, led
by mobile phones and tablet devices. With the evolution of these devices, the
utility of the applications developed for them is increasing as well. This
tendency has many beneficial effects on the lives of people with hearing
problems, providing them with an opportunity to carry devices containing many
useful applications tailored to their needs. Our aim was to try to find and
present in our work such applications and to present them on the mAthena
platform.
This diploma theses describes the Android operating system and the Google Play
store that gives the user the ability to install applications on devices with
the Android operating system. Subsequently we refer to the mobile devices that
use the Android operating system.
The next section presents the survey we conducted to find free applications for
people with hearing loss. Our research includes the search, selection and
collection of free applications for mobile devices with Android operating
system, the study and classification using application selection criteria and
application rejection criteria. A description of the categories in which the
applications were divided is provided. Applications can belong to more than one
category, depending on their functions.
Finally the diploma theses presents the selected applications, together with
the information for each application in English and Greek. The final list
contains fewer than 180 applications as over 260 were downloaded and tested and
even more were inspected. We believe that the selected applications are
applications that can offer particular benefits to people with hearing problems
and can provide solutions and meet their daily needs.
