Summary:
The availability of blood products after documented need for transfusion as a therapeutic agent has brought about a significant improvement of the outcome of surgical patients, chronic hematological or oncological diseases and emergencies, especially of traumatic nature (accidents), so the blood donation is a daily medical need.
The results of a domestic investigation for incentives and blood donation attitudes, particularly in the years of economic crisis - with the possible influences on this - could direct and influence , practically, the way that institutions related to blood donation facing the donor and addressed to him, with a view to increasing, if possible, the mobilization of blood donors on a voluntary basis, but also to maintain their blood donating status , creating in this way a stable regular volunteer blood donors network that will serve the domestic needs for blood products.
The sample of this study consists of blood donors attending the Blood sections of the General Hospital in Tripoli and the Oncology Hospital of Athens' Agios Savvas ", which they were asked to complete a structured questionnaire after the blood donation process, while recording several parameters and characteristics and experiences from the blood donation process.
Βlood donors recorded in this study were mostly men, the majority of them (not very) young and were urban city residents, most were completed at least primary education, often working as employees or self-employed, most had donated blood again in the past, while in this recording phase they donated often as directed donors not systematically participated in donor club. In connection with the incentives stated that influenced their decision to donate blood, most often, as reported by them, was the encouragement from family, the encouragement of friends, information from the media, the encouragement from other donors the encouragement from partners, the blood donation related day off and the blood donation card, while relatively low moved volunteering and altruism.
On multivariate correlations: As to the intention of Future Blood donation we had positive correlation with education level, the Past blood donation process, encouragement from other donors, the information from the media, while negatively correlated was the day off and the blood donation for a particular patient.In the Satisfaction with the Blood Donation Department: positive correlation was with the level of education, habitation in urban city and Past blood donation. However, the findings of this study give an important and promising position as applicants were determined to give blood, regardless of individual characteristics or incentives, in the midst of economic and - partly - social instability ravaging the country during the recent years to indicate a high degree of satisfaction and intention for future donations, consistent with positive feelings of loyalty towards the blood donation procedure.It is important that the attention of professionals and health institutions related to the topic of donation, be directed to attract and satisfy donor candidates, with a view to their return effortlessly and convert them into active, systematic blood donors.
