Summary:
The ultimate goal of every endodontic treatment is the persistence and function of the tooth in the patient’s oral cavity as much as possible for a long time during lifespan. On the other hand, there is always the possibility of future loss of endodontically treated teeth.
Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to provide conclusions as to the reasons for loss of endodontically treated teeth and potential aggravating factors.
Materials and Methods: The sample of this study consisted of patients attending the Dental School of Athens. Decision of extraction was taken after thorough clinical and radiographic examination by a group of clinicians specialized in all areas of dentistry. The status of each tooth was recorded on a special form.
Results: 785 endodontically treated teeth were examined. Extraction was decided for the 41% of them. The main extraction reason was non- restorability (52.2%). Aggravating factors were considered the absence of permanent restoration, extensive caries, non-restorable coronal fractures and periodontal disease. Poor oral hygiene was proved aggravating regarding additional correlative factors.
Conclusions: Non-restorability was the main reason of loss of endodontically treated teeth. Failure of endodontic treatment may not be the only reason before all possible treatment options are exhausted.
