Estimate the intensity of postoperative pain after thoracic surgery (VATS or open) the 1st and 4th postoperative day and what systemic analgesia methods used for pain management
Summary:
Introduction
Pain constitutes the most significant defense mechanism or the organism and is the primmest element of nature that has to do with morbidity. All types or thorax-scission surgical operations are painful and cause various negative consequences for the patient. The postoperative pain is characterized as an intense algoesthetic pain, caused by the section. It causes numerous unpleasant aesthetic, sentimental and non-physical (mental) experiences which are accompanied by reactions of the Autonomic Nervous System, psychological reactions and behavioral changes which are expedited by the surgical damage. The aim of this project is to evaluate the intensity of postoperative pain on the 1st and 4th postoperative day after the open thorax or VATS operation, systematic analgesia which have been used for dealing with postoperative pain. The individual goals of the study are the investigation-search of the patient’s physical and psychological situation before and during the 1st and 4th postoperative day and their satisfaction as far as dealing with the pain is concerned.
Method
The sources of information which have been used are publicated studies of the last twenty years relevant to the subject by international scientific data, Hellenic and English published scientific magazines and records of medical and nursing conferences.
There has been a recollective transcribing recording of medical files of 80 patients of the thoraxsurgery clinic of the Chest Diseases “Sotiria” General Hospital of Athens, of questionnaires have been answered by patients themselves or by their relatives, during their treatment.
Data Analysis
All data which has been resulted from questionnaires, have been elaborated and analyzed through the method of statistical analysis and more precisely through the logismic package of statistical analysis SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 22.

The level of statistical significance is set to p<0.05. For the statistical analysis of the quality results the x^2 test has been used. Moreover, the non-parametric criterion Kruscal-Wallis has been used, which is used alternatively to the variance analysis (ANOVA), when the dependent variable is injunctive and the non-parametric criterion Wilcoxon signed-ranks test allows comparisons between injunctive variables.
Conclusion – Results
The comperative study was conducted on patients who underwent thorax section (open or closed) and revealed that male patients between 40 -60 years old experience less pain, and their psychological condition before the operation is positive. On the contrary, female patients between the ages 60-80, who claim negative psychological condition before the operation and postoperationally, experience more pain.
A significantly important parameter as far as the intensity of pain on the 1st Postoperational Day (P.O.D.) is concerned, reveals to be the psychological condition of the patients before the operation, since patients who claim positive psychological condition have 3.33 more possibilities to have a good psychological condition on the first P.O.D. and experience pain of lower intensity.
