Summary:
Aim: It was to investigate the psychological adaptation of men and women undergoing hemodialysis .

Material and Methods: The study population was patients (men and women) undergoing hemodialysis at the Dialysis Unit of the General Hospital of Lamia. The research involved 70 patients (37 men, 52.9%). The research tools were the short version of the COPE questionnaire, the Athens insomnia scale (AIS), the scale of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Zung depression self-assessment scale.

Results: The mean age of participants was 63.46 ± 15.30 years. Seeking support, acceptance and refuge in religion (81%, 75% and 75% respectively) were the main coping mechanisms. The anxiety rate was 6%, while depression was estimated between 17-26%. The mean score on the AIS questionnaire (7.71 ± 5.13) was indicative of severe insomnia. The women had significantly higher levels in the dimension «depression» (p = 0.001) compared to men. The acceptance and active treatment were commonly used by people under 70 years, while seeking support from those above 70years. In the negative emotions subscale, illiterate scored significantly higher compared with all other groups (p <0.05).

Conclusions: This study highlights the need for interventions for the prevention and treatment of mental disorders, especially depression, in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Poor evaluation of the mental burden of these patients may lead to poor treatment response.
