Summary:
Environmental Adult Education (EAE) is a relatively new and unique practice and field of study in the international literature. The need for an environmental literacy of all citizens is necessary due to the environmental degradation that threatens the sustainability of the ecosystems and societies. Responsible to bridge this major gap in Greece are the Non-Governmental Organisations’ (NGOs) environmental adult educators. However, any worldwide attempt to focus on the research interest of the role of the environmental adult instructor is limited. The purpose of this study is to highlight the complex role of the environmental adult educators who work in Greek NGOs. More specifically the study investigates: 1) the starting point of the instructors who involve in the EAE: educational and professional background, motivations, characteristics, 2) the role of the environmental adult instructor, 3) the features of EAE actions / programs, 4) the design and implementation of EAE actions / programs, 5) the barriers and restrictions in the EAE area and the ways to address them. For the purposes of the investigation there were taken 11 interviews with environmental adult educators working at NGOs in Attica. The interviews were analyzed by the method of qualitative content analysis. The results show that most environmental adult educators have realized the complexity of the environmental issues, but not yet adopted a clear orientation to the theoretical and methodological framework of the EAE. The Greek environmental NGO programs largely intent on achieving environmental information, awareness and people encouragement for relative actions. The idea of an active citizen occurs mostly as a vision, an ideological tendency and a purpose to fulfill, which is mainly executed by NGOs with sociopolitical action.
