Over the last decades, the quality and safety of the provided services and most specifically at the healthcare field is a fundamental demand of the world society.Quality management system application is an important tool that proved to meet the above requirement. Many theoritical models have been developed in order to effectively apply quality management systems in organisations and companies. In the laboratories area, quality assesment systems that are currently in use, in order to guaradee quality assuranse, are based on the international standards of ISO 9000, ISO 9001, ISO 17025, ISO 15189 series etc. The term quality denotes the policy, procedures and systematic actions that are needed in order to sustain a high level of trust in repeatability and accuracy of a given result.
Among the actions that a laboratory takes toward this direction, is the accreditation through the application of the ISO 15189 standards. Through accreditation a laboratory certifies its technical efficiency and improves its organization as well as the quality of the providing services. Therefore, test results liability is upgraded. In order to acquire an accreditation certification, a laboratory has to fulfill the administrative as well as the technical demands of the ISO 15189 standards. Further, it has to be audited by the national official technical consultant that for Greece is the National Accreditation System (NAS). For this purpose, it takes a continuous, insistent and co-ordinated effort of everyone who is involved in the laboratory test results procedure.
At this dissertation, we discuss in details the ISO 15189 application on the Kostantopoulio Hospital Blood Transfusion Unit (BTU). The ISO 15189 requirements are thoroughly described along with the necessary steps that have to be fulfilled beforehand in order the accreditation certification finally be acquired. All the consecutive preparative steps are described, from NAS application form to the assessment procedure by the appropriate staff. The ISO 15189 application derived benefits are discussed. Accreditation acquisition procedure of our BTU is mostly innovative as for the first time an immunohematology and virology laboratory of a Greek National Health System hospital is accredited.
