Summary:
The somatosensory system is the system that covers the somatic senses and allows the body to feel touch, pain, vibrations, changes in temperature, position in space, etc. In order to achieve that, sensory receptors are located throughout the body.
Referred or reflex pain is the discomfort perceived in an area of the body other than the actual afflicted area. Reflective pain occurs when a nerve is damaged or compressed near its root. In that case, the sensation of pain will be felt throughout the pathway of the particular nerve.
Classification of pain is done with many different criteria like intensity, duration and location. This is often useful in determining treatment and prognosis. Unfortunately, even today, the terminology on various kinds of pain is not consistent throughout scientific literature and this leads to many misunderstandings.
It is of utmost importance that the physician decides if the pain is acute or chronic. Also, the cause must be identified and proper treatment begun. This involves dealing with both the cause of the pain as well as the pain itself, using drugs that can reduce or eliminate the feeling. Prostaglandins, a group of lipid compounds, play an important role in pain management. Additionally nowadays there are even more methods for treatment, such as acupuncture, ultrasound, endothermies and more.
