Sculpted in the round depictions of children in Greece during the Roman period
Summary:
The purpose of the thesis is to record the sculpted depictions in the round of mortal children along with their iconographic characteristics as well as the reasons for their use during the Roman period. For the first time in archaeological research, a collection of 95 sculpted children’s depictions from all over Greece has been recorded into a single catalog. Until the present time, these sculptures have been presented in a fragmentary way and only as part of a broader catalog or as mere references in various journal articles or excavation chronicles. The scope of the thesis is the study of mortal children, both boys and girls, who do not exceed the twelfth - thirteenth year of age and have yet to reach adulthood.
To begin with, the thesis examines the position a child held within the family and society during the Greek and Roman antiquity. Next, indicative references to ancient Greek and Latin literature are provided so as to determine the children’s role as successors of the family and the city; after all, children were to be those future citizens and future mothers who would give society continuity and cohesion.
On the other hand, studying and analyzing the visual depiction of children in early time periods results in determining the basic iconographic characteristics as well as their division into age subgroups. The various difficulties arising by a sculptures’ research are also presented, such as defining a child’s sex or age. Furthermore, the iconographic features of each gender are specified in terms of nudity, clothing and headdress.
Finally, the scholars’ conflict about the usage of children’s sculptured depictions is examined; it is claimed they were used as a part of sculptural decoration of funerary monuments or in houses of wealthy families in order to present their newest members, respectively. A similar assumption is applied for the decoration of public buildings, like the Nymphaeum of Herodes Atticus in Olympia. Last but not least, the statistical analysis of the sculptures has contributed to drawing useful conclusions about the iconographic characteristics of children in this particular time period.
The thesis is accompanied by 98 plates of sculptures, offering informative details for the reader along with statistical diagrams and tables.
