Empúries and Roses. Greek colonies on the iberian peninsula. Comparative approach (6th-3rd century BC) / Ampurias y Rosas. Colonias griegas en la península ibérica. Estudio comparativo (VI-III siglo a.C.)
Summary:
On the other side of the Mediterranean, the interest for the greek colonies in Iberia began to manifest during the beginning of the 19th century and flourished during the start of the 20th, with the regular excavations in the area where the phocaean colony of Empúries was located. During the whole span of the century relevant studies were published, but after the '80s research about Empúries and Roses was very prolific with numerous publications that approached the subject with more specific and complex themes. A milestone for the study of the Greek past of the Iberian peninsula was the establishment of the Iberia Graeca Center in 2006, which aimed for the documentation, dissemination and preservation of its Greek heritage. On the contrary, in the greek research field and bibliography there are no relative research studies.
The purpose of this present study is the examination and presentation of the remnants of these two colonies and the exploration, to the possible degree, of their start and the merchant and socio-political relationships that took place after their foundation. Moreover, this thesis is a first step to approach the Greek bibliography of classical archaeology about the Iberian peninsula and also aims to incite more interest in the greek research community for further research.
In the first chapter a general description of the area where the colonies of Empúries and Roses are located takes place, with references to the geographical morphology which was an important factor for the choice of the position by the Greek colonists from Phocaea where these cities were erected. Following, the written sources about the under-examination colonies are presented and the problematic elements that come from them are analyzed. After that, the architectural phases are displayed, from their foundation till the 3rd century BC, with a mention in the fortification of the colonies, from which it can be deduced the nature of their relationships with their surroundings, the relations between them and with the native population. In the next chapter the cutting processes/techniques of the coins are analyzed, which are the processes of the western greek type, as well as their chronological phases and the influences from Carthage and Marseille (Massalia). In conclusion, an effort to explore the starting points of the colonies and their relationship between them, but also with the indigenous population (with Massalia as the metropolis) and the areas that were under the influence of Rome and Carthage.
