Miniature hydriai from the sanctuary of Demeter at Abdera
Summary:
This thesis aims to study from the technical and ritualistic aspects a small group of the deposit of miniature hydriai that were discovered at Abdera during the excavations of 1982-1989, under the supervision of Koukouli-Chrysanthaki.
The first chapter begins with a brief historical overview of the city of Abdera from its colonization in the middle of 7th century BC to the roman conquest in the middle of the 2nd century BC. Consequently follows the progress of the excavations from the mid-20th century and the revelation of the hellenistic southern enceinte of the city by Lazaridis, to the excavations during the 1980s and the revelation of the northwest corner of the archaic and classical north fortification wall. A brief reference about the sanctuary of Demeter is included, where a huge deposit mainly of miniature hydriai was found.
In the second chapter the group of hydriskai is examined from a technical perspective, namely the categorization in types and the comments of their decoration. At the third chapter an interpretative approach is attempted, firstly by examining the cultic activity at the sanctuary of Demeter and then at other sanctuaries of the goddess in the area of the northern Aegean coasts, and specifically at the coasts of Asia Minor and the islands of eastern Aegean, Thrace and Macedonia. The choice of the sanctuaries depended on a combination of criteria, after the geographical dispersion and the deposition of miniature hydriai and other clay vessels and ritual objects were taken into account. First is the exposition of the examples of the Asia Minor and the islands, since Abdera are an ionian colony, and then follow the examples of the Thrace and Macedonia. The goal of this comparative study is to determine whether the ritualistic use and deposition of the miniature hydria at Abdera is affected by the practices in Asia Minor, Thrace and Macedonia or are a local variation.
A brief interpretive approach of the use of hydriskai is developed in the fourth chapter, at the fifth follow the conclusions and the comments regarding the deposition of miniature hydriai in the northern Aegean and, finally, an appendix is included on cults at the northern and southern enceinte of the city of Abdera.
