Study of Social Presence in a Blended Learning Environment in the teaching of Modern Greek Literature
Summary:
Blended learning constitutes a functional pedagogic mechanism which incorporates face-to-face as well as distance learning activities and has as a goal an additional pedagogic value. In a blended learning environment which focuses on asynchronous communication the teacher / coordinator, the learning content and of course the learners play a crucial role. These three factors and the way in which they interact with each other have been described in the Community of Inquiry (CoI) Model as “presences”: teaching, social and cognitive presence, whose interdependence secures the quality of the learning experience. The present research has focused on the social aspect of interaction among teenage students in an asynchronous learning environment and has strived to showcase the way in which this interaction is developed in relation to the teaching presence (focused interventions on the part of the coordinator). The questions that have been posed regard the quality and the depth of interaction along with the coordinator and the participants’ social presence and the ways the phenomenon of social presence arises. The findings present ways of detecting the “density” of social presence and factors that may facilitate it offering a useful beginning to the distant coordinator / teacher but also to the researcher of the field of asynchronous computer-mediated communication.
