Bilingualism: verbal and nonverbal intelligence
Summary:
Recent studies on bilingualism suggest that bilinguals achieve better results in nonverbal tasks, whereas they seem to score lower in vocabulary activities. These hypotheses were tested in a sample of 36 bilingual and monolingual students between 8-11 years old. Nonverbal intelligence was assesssed with Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices (CPM) and verbal intelligence with Raven's Vocabulary Test (CVS). The results indicate that there was no significant difference between two groups in CPM (nonverbal intelligence). However, in CVS (verbal intelligence) bilingual students scored significantly lower than control group as predicted. These results provide new directions in bilingual education in Greece and worldwide.
