Nihilism in Demons of Dostoyevsky
Summary:
Τhe current study explores the fundamentals of nihilism in European philosophy as it was developed mainly under the influence by Nietzsche’s theory and respectively in Russian intellect as it was depicted in Turgenev literature and in the proclamations of the Russian radicals. Then, there is a brief introduction on the main aspects of Dostoevsky’s view about life and human beings as they are unveiled in his work on Demons. Following specific abstracts of the book, it is attempted to reveal the traces of nihilism in the words and the actions of the characters, with consequences on their behavior, their perception of the world and their coexistence with the others. At the end, the very personal opinion of the writer on the matter of nihilism is exposed, focusing on the possible ways that society and individuals can escape the trap of nihilism, in order to retrieve the lost sense of fulfillment and lost meaning of world.
