The Role of Expressive vocabulary and Pragmatics in Social Competence and the Behavior of students with learning disabilities
Summary:
Background: According to the literature, Pragmatic language impairment and expressive language disorder affects not only the social abilities of children with learning disabilities but also their behavior. In terms of prediction, it is supported that Pragmatics and expressive vocabulary are identified as predictors for behavioral problems.

Methods: In our research participated 56 children from the first class of the primary school who met the of the research (criteria (the children had normal intelligence and they presented difficulties in the field of reading or in that of mathematics) for learning difficulties. The sample consisted of 41 boys and 15 girls and it was assessed their abilities in expressive vocabulary, Pragmatics and psychosocial adjustment.

Results: The statistical analysis showed that there was a moderate positive correlation between social competence and pragmatics abilities as, and a moderate negative correlation between behavioral problems and pragmatics abilities. As it concerned expressive vocabulary was found a moderate negative correlation with behavioral problems. Pragmatic competence and expressive vocabulary were good predictors only for the variable of behavioral problems.

Conclusions & Implications: The results of our research are according to the literature and they showed that actually there was a correlation between the variables. It is suggested further research with these variables in the field of learning difficulties and a follow up in a later class in order these predictions to be confirmed.
