Summary:
It is an undeniable fact that the institution of education at modern times encounters a variety of challenges in local, national and international level. In this frame, the Greek educational system is also included, which has the task, especially in recent decades, to outdistance obstacles such as disparities and discriminations that are displayed by the modern societies. The mechanism of their production and perpetuation must be the basic target of every and single democratic state and for this reason the condition of its success is the intercultural incorporation of all citizens to social and political institutions. The Romani or Roma are an ethnic group that is marginalized because of the social representation which is constructed by the ruling group for them.
The present study carried out under the program “The Education of Roma Children” during the school year 2012-2013 and aims to investigate three basic parameters: the theoretical documentation, the researching activity and educational policy. The present research takes into consideration both social groups at the same time during the process of integration. It is especially important as this framework of research focuses on a comprehensive understanding of the problems that arise from the complexity of Roma’s social circumstances and helps the tools of policy intervention to be designed in a more effective way. The methodology of the specific research process is based on the qualitative techniques of semi-constructed interview and content analysis. The interviews were applied to 24 Roma students, their parents and teachers in the village of Sofades in Karditsa. Also the interviews were applied to 24 classmates who were not included into the Roma community, their parents and teachers. The results of content analysis evince that the process of integration demands efforts from the parts of both social groups with primary aim to cooperate under the circumstances of equality and justice. Furthermore, the educational system cannot afford to do the basic changes, but it needs the contribution of the state’s institutions and mostly the family one.
