The operational cost of education: the financial cost that families assume
Summary:
The cost of education has recently become the focus of analyses and discussions among education economists and politicians. The following questions are posed: what exactly the cost in these discussions represents, whether this is a real cost and who is burdened, in the end, with this cost. Does the rationalisation of expenses in education lead to a growing withdrawal of the state and a corresponding assumption of these burdens by the family? Families invest money and hopes in private-run after-school classes and schools, in order to offer their children not only a more rounded education, but also a future social advantage. So, the myth of free public education is debunked, as this expenditure is directed towards the private sector. It is therefore necessary to redefine the strategic design of the educational system and review the priorities in creating educational policies, with the aim to establish an effective educational system that is of high quality, aiming at diffusing inequalities and accessible by all.
The aim of this paper is to specify the cost of education that families assume, in an effort to redress the shortcomings of the public/state education that is offered or to offer their children better quality educational services in order to render them more competitive in the job market.
