Summary:
In this work we review all the existing technologies used in various applications for Assistive Technologies for people with visual impairment even blindness. The study refers to applications designed for smart mobile devices and ordinary computers using one of the following operating systems: iOs-Android-Windows. The applications that were reviewed can be divided in the below categories: Screen Readers, Text-to-speech, Magnifiers, Color/Contrast, Bookreaders and Text accessibility. The first step was to test all applications from the above categories listed in the following collections for Assistive Technologies: “ATHENA” and “m-ATHENA. Following, details about the description and functionality of each application were collected, with final goal to update the information given in the above collections. The methodology that was used, was to first gather detailed information for each technology from the internet using a lot of related articles. Then for each application the description in the above collections was compared to the description given by the applications’ developer. Finally each application was thoroughly tested. The result was to gather all relevant information that will be used in order to update the description for each application in the two collections of assistive technologies, so that they become more detailed for the users.
