Summary:
On November 17, 2015, at 07:10:07 UTC (09:10 local time) an Mw=6.4 earthquake struck Lefkas Island, with the epicenter located 20 km southwest of Lefkas town. The earthquake caused two fatalities, eight injuries, extensive earthquake environmental effects (EEE) and damage to buildings and infrastructure of the island. Based on already published scientific data on field reconnaissance of earthquake environmental effects on Lefkas Island, no primary effects were observed, while secondary earthquake environmental effects were classified as ground cracks, slope failures, such as landslides and rockfalls, and near-surface liquefaction phenomena.
The aim of this study is the detailed description of the environmental effects induced by the November 2015 Lefkas earthquake based on already published scientific data and the estimation of the seismic intensity (I) for each locality based on ESI 2007 (Environmental Seismic Intensity 2007 scale) and the guidelines of Michetti et al. (2007). The highest intensity which was VIIIESI 2007 was assigned to the Egremni and Porto Katsiki coastal areas in the southwestern part of the island and concerned large volume slope failures.
