Summary:
Background: Children with cancer experience a wide variety of symptoms, which they have to manage along with the health care professionals and their families. Due to the special nature of the disease and the sensitivity of the childhood, there is a constant effort from the scientific community, for better understanding of symptoms and their related factors, in order to continually improve their management. Lately, the term symptom clusters has started to be introduced and studied into the clinical practice. Objective: The aim of this systematic review is to explore the existing bibliography related to the clustering of symptoms in paediatric oncology patients, any existing tools for the assessment and the evaluation of symptom clusters and the effects of the use of symptom clustering in the management of cancer and its treatment. Methods: In order to conduct this systematic review we searched the electronic databases Medline, Science Direct and CINAHL, as well as related printed material. Results: The search resulted in 9 studies that were related to our objectives. Through the study of these articles, we were able to ascertain the existence of multiple symptom clusters. The majority of the researchers recognized the frequency of the clustering of nausea and vomiting in the same symptom cluster. Also they found diversity in the clustering of fatigue and pain. Finally, one tool for the evaluation and assessment of symptom clusters, as well as their prognostic value, were recognized. Conclusions: The clustering of symptoms conduces to the more effective management of the disease and the improvement of patients’ quality of life. However, there is no common agreement as for the methodology of the research in this field, while there is a significant absence of tools for the evaluation and assessment of symptom clusters, in the clinical practice.
