Genetically Modified Foods: A longitudinal comparative study of attitudes and opinions among groups of Greek population
Summary:
This research study started as advised by Mr. Kyriakos Athanasiou in order to develop and analyze the issue of genetically modified foods, as well as from my personal interest in this matter. This research study was an opportunity to explore in depth the issue of GMOs that are already part of our daily life and is an issue of concern in our country, in the European Union, but also worldwide. The material was collected from numerous and diverse websites, as well as articles and extracts from foreign and Greek books.
The research study is divided into two parts. The first part consists of eight chapters elaborating the concept of genetic modification and the methods it uses. I also present the risks and benefits of GMOs for humans, science and the environment. The seventh chapter develops the European legislative framework and some laws that regulate GMOs in the US and Greece. The final chapter presented survey results for the views of the Greek population about genetically modified food.
In the second part, a set of educational activities around the issue of GMOs is presented, which will allow children to form their own opinion, through their own research, be activated as citizens and to see the environment, interactions with the science and society in a new light. The study ends with general conclusions.
