Dietary supplements use by students of High school in Greece- The role of school
Summary:
The consumption of dietary supplements, namely nutritional products designed to supplement the normal diet is a habit that according to research in recent years has taken a significant portion of the population including adolescents. Since there is no data for Greece, this paper examines whether this practice has been adopted by teenage students of high schools in our country. For this purpose a questionnaire was constructed on the principle and administered to 215 high school students to investigate their opinion on nutritional supplements, the factors influencing consumption, the informed sources, the role of the school. At the end of the questionnaire, cited a list of supplements to check if they have consumed any / some of them in the last month. Based on the results obtained after the statistical processing of data, almost half of the students that took part on the survey have consumed one or more dietary supplements regardless of frequency. The most popular formulations are the multivitamins / minerals-vitamins at a rate of 30.1%. The class is a factor which was found to have statistically significant difference in overall supplements consumption in the last month with the students of third class of High school to have the highest consumption rates, but also participation in some sport activity seemed to positively affect protein / amino acids / creatine and energy drinks consumption. Moreover, better performance in the courses of Chemistry and Biology affects in a negative way the consumption of energy drinks. The family is the main source of information, and adolescents disagree that a related subject such as chemistry or biology has provided sufficient information on the subject. Finally, negative is the fact that the knowledge they have gained from school can help them in their decision to use dietary supplements.
