Police officer' s interpersonal conflicts
Summary:
Conflict, as an inherent and necessary element of human interaction, is a crucial aspect for the wellbeing and productivity of modern work organizations. It can cause surprise that at police institutions, where the conflict is apparent both internally and externally in a daily basis, this major issue of the interpersonal conflict has not been studied at all so far. Especially in Greece, little research has been conducted on the local police organization, despite its impact on social life. Reviewing the international literature and through the lenses of social psychology, the present study examines two interrelated questions: the nature of the relationships police officers develop among them and the aspects of conflict that erupt in these relationships. Fifteen police officers participated in the current research in which the qualitative method of semi-construct interview was used. From the narratives it is revealed that police officers tend to create an extremely cohesive team which is usually represented as “family”, with its own unique culture and identity. Inside the police team, officers create intimate relationships and conflicts, whenever they occur, can be characterized by intense emotion, aggressiveness and violence.
