The aim of this study is the research about the construction of the traditional costumes in a
miniature through the case of Maria Vachaviolou-Ioannidou, in which she is working on this for
decades and served this part of tradition by creating tiny local costumes from all over Greece
with great success.
Folk art is one of the key elements of the Folkloristics. The traditional local costumes are
included in folklore and therefore constitute one of the objects of the folklore research. Since the
beginning of the 20th century, the interest about the traditional costumes in thumbnail dressed
small dolls has begun and also started to create a number of various collections.
According to the study of this subject, the methodology that was followed is the
beginning of the reference to Folklore studies and the elements that are able to characterize the
traditional culture and also the ways to preserve it, through the various cultural institutions. Also,
an attempt to explore the term was compared to the traditional costume. Then, the study was
extended to the modern construction of local Greek costumes in a miniature, and then focus on
the main subject of the study, which was in the case of Maria Vachaviolou–Ioannidou.
In the second part, the method of the subject investigation took place, which was mainly
based to the Maria's life story, through the necessary information that was collected, along with
the bibliographic approach which helped to complete the picture of the research, which is the
subject that Maria Vachaviolou-Ioannidou is dealing with. The object of creating required over
time a very important collection around the traditional costumes, which enriches the folklore
research. The significance of the collection lies in the conformity of the construction to the
original traditional clothes.
The findings with the help of the regard to the preservation of knowledge construction of
the local traditional costumes from all over Greece were very encouraging due to the absolute
commitment of the creator to the fidelity and authenticity of the construction, after thorough
research on this subject.
Secondarily, the life story of Mary Vachaviolou–Ioannidou, created a significant picture
of the life from her childhood in the rural area of Aridaia Pellas, until the teenage years in the

urban environment of Thessaloniki and the progress of Rhodes and Athens which goes back to
Thessaloniki. All this, along with the creative process of the construction of costumes in a
miniature. Lastly, an assessment of this work by comparing the construction of the original, but
also, the acceptance of the work by the relevant cultural institutions and museums, which
promote the preservation of the traditional values.
