Music and the arts in the interwar period: a way of social criticism and protest
Summary:
At the beginning of the 20th century the bourgeois society was met with resistance by the fields of art and philosophy. More specifically, the avant garde movements and theFrankfurt Critical School perceived the bourgeois society as profoundly corrupted. According to the Frankfurt Critical School the cause for this was the mainstream way of thinking, that is subjectivity, and art could play a determining role towards its eradication. In the current thesis we study the way art took a critical stand against the three basic relationships: subject-dominance, subjet-identity, subject-nature. Case studies are selected from different art forms: music, painting, architecture, cinema, literature/poetry, taking into account the greater historical context of interwar Europe. An emphasis is given to the special way each art form denies to be depicted accordingto the mainstream subjectivity and the way it points to a better situation. The works that are considered most prominently in this are: Τhe Cabinet of Dr Caligari, Moses und Aron, Schröder House, Modern Times,The Threepenny Opera, Mahagonny Songspiel, Futurism, Surrealism, Expressionism, Functionalism, (Russian avant-garde, De stijl, Bauhaus), Sagrada Familia, Webern op 9, Wozzeck, Jonny spielt auf, Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, dodecaphony, Bad times for poetry, Guernica, Prufrock, Chamonix, Lulu, Dada.
