Summary:
The following Thesis researches the reasons why citizens/users use social media, and more precisely it focuses on the reasons and motives that lead users to utilize Facebook - one of the most popular social media. First of all, in reference to global bibliography, we examine how social media have been used and how they have influenced the daily life of people and the changes that they have caused in both the communication level as well as the sociopolitical level ; in addition we examine their differences in comparison with the traditional media and how they have shaped the new conditions of communication. Furthermore we introduce Facebook and several examples of how Facebook pages have been used as a place for users to organize and act in a sociopolitical level. After that we showcase the reasons of usage of Facebook groups.

The empirical approach of the Thesis focused on five Greek Facebook groups with sociopolitical content so that we can answer "who" and "why" the aforementioned groups are being used. The results of the research assured the primary reasons of the usage of social media according to the theoretical approach of U & G, which submits that there are four main reasons for using social media: a) socializing b) entertainment c) finding a personal d) finding information .

The results of the study among 200 participants, in which 63 of them were men (31,5 %) and 137 were women (68,5%), led to the following important findings: a) the usage of Facebook groups of sociopolitical nature is aimed towards finding information, self-status seeking, socializing and entertainment, b) the demographic data of the participants affect the aforementioned reasons.
