Use of Geographical Information Systems in Managing Historic Settlements. The case-study of Leontari, Arcadia

This thesis examines some of the capabilities offered by GIS and how they can be implemented in managing historic settlements. These is achieved partly by studying similar case studies and international practices and then by trying to practically apply the tools offered to the management of the historic settlement of Leontari. Some theoretical and methodological issues are addressed, concerning the management of architectural heritage and the use of GIS for this purpose and several management issues observed in Leontari are being tackled, namely the preservation of its architectural identity, the management of different protection zones and the protection of the surrounding natural environment. For this purpose, survey data were entered in a relational database which was then connected to a GIS and further spatial analysis was conducted. As a result, a complete spatial database was formed useful in the synthesis of different information and the creation of electronic thematic maps.
