Critical edition of the String Quartet in A minor by Antiochos Evaggelatos
Summary:
The present thesis was conducted as part of the Music Department of the National and Kapodistrian University Masters Program and constitutes a critical edition of the String Quartet in A minor by Antiochos Evangelatos. Evangelatos was a versatile music personality of the 20th century ranked among the most significant composers of the second generation of the Greek National School of Music, as well as a distinguished conductor and educator. The Quarter was composed in Vienna in 1930. Since then the particular work remains unpublished and readings of it are realized from copies of the unclear, unpractical and erroneous music manuscript.
The aim of the edition is the restoration of the music text, its conversion from a handwritten into a modern digital form and through these processes the diffusion and distinction of a work of great technique and inspiration which constitutes part of the Greek National Music School’s history.
The restoration was realized in the spirit of the functional value of the edition as well as the accuracy of the music text and its faithfulness to the sources, and it concerned all the structural elements of the musical composition as imprinted according music notation, meaning, issues of notes, melody and harmony, rhythm elements, dynamics indicators, articulation indicators and playing technique.
Apart from the critical edition, the thesis includes a historical introduction about the life and multifaceted work of Antiochos Evangelatos in the field of composition, orchestra conducting, teaching and administrative work. The prominence of Greek composers work and the development of music and cultural life, in general, in the Greek area were the pivot around which all aspects of his efforts revolved.
The hereby registered modern and handy critical edition of the String Quartet in A Minor by Antiochos Evangelatos is a contribution to the science of music by preserving and giving prominence to a work that is part not only of the Greek National Music School’s history but of modern Greek classical creation’s history as a whole, and claims its place in both the Greek and international repertoire.
