Original Title:
Democratization process and ethnic reconsiliation in FYROM from 1991 up to the present in relation to EU Accession requirements and prospects.
Summary:
The thesis explores the multiple dimensions of the democratization process in FYROM, highlighting the difficulties that have been surmounted or remain to be resolved. Since its independence in 1991 FYROM has been struggling to create the political and social environment that will allow it to stand as a guarantor of domestic social peace, cohesion, development and prosperity and as a reliable partner of international organizations. The country is trying to build those relationships with its citizens that feature broad, equal, protected and mutually binding consultation. In other words FYROM has been striving to establish a viable and self-sustaining democracy and instill to its people and its institutions the democratic values that can ensure ethnic reconciliation and peaceful co-existence. The road so far has been difficult, full of traps and insurmountable obstacles deriving from the strong nationalistic rhetoric of its consitutive ethnic communities and the undemocratic culture of its political leadership. The international community has been offering its assistance to the new weak state of former Yugoslavia and monitors its democratization and reconciliation trajectory with the prospect of EU integration.
