Summary:
The primal aim of this thesis is to invstigate and to conclude to a well documented understanding of the notion “antiromanticism” within the wider space of musical modernism. The research discloses the aspects of the aesthetic category of antiromanticism that are found in the european and the american suntagma musicum during the first half of the twentieth century. The recording of these aspects is aiming to two fundamental scientific ends: the first concerns the understanding of the evolution of antiromanticism, and consequently the evaluation of these antiromantic views in order to deduce common elements and differences. In this way, it is going to be checked whether these european and american antiromantic standpoints can be considered as relative, analogous or even antithetical. The second angle of the inquiry, which is served indirectly through several references during the whole course of the approach, concerns a wider historical - aesthetical analysis of twentieth century' s american art music in respect with the interaction with the corresponding european. The study is based in a descriptive - bibliographical strategy. Hence, it is about a historiographical process which targets first and foremost the aesthetic field and the writings of the composers themeselves. The citation of specific musical art works serves the accreditation of the aesthetic beliefs. This disquisition hopes to enrich our knowledge about twentieth century music as well as to offer an interpretation from a different perspective.
