Summary:
The aim of this survey was to examine the impact of physical activity and smoking on semen analysis parameters in young healthy Greek male population. Our motivation was the conflicting results of other investigations. Our study suggests that men with moderate physical activity have higher rates of total sperm motility and total progressive sperm motility compared to men with low physical activity. Additionally, men with high physical activity have lower total sperm motility and total progressive sperm motility compared to men with low physical activity. The above results are
confirmed by other studies and potential mechanisms are presented in order to explain them. Finally, we suspect that there is a negative correlation between physical activity and total sperm motility in smokers, without being statistically significant (p-value=0.062). In order to explain it, we propose a potential synergetic action of smoking and physical activity, based on the oxidative stress that is present and characterized both of them. Undoubtedly, further investigation is required
to strengthen our conclusion and the proposed mechanisms and hypothesis.
