Summary:
The following dissertation contributes to the multilevel and in depth advisement of the crisis management in the school area.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the factors which altogether influence the procedure of the crisis management as well as the action of the crisis management groups, so that the organization and the people involved are as effective as possible, in order to avoid crisis or to reduce the consequences of the crisis, by confronting them in the right way.
The crisis management forms a multifaceted domain of our age as well as a channel of the modern administration, aiming mainly to both the analysis and the management of the risks that a business, an organization or a country may confront. The aim of the crisis management is the protection, the advancement and the benefit of the societies through the appropriate methods.
Α crisis may affect seriously an organization while in some cases it may as well lead to its collapse. Τhe experience gained through the management of a crisis includes the seeds for the future success, in deterring or managing other crises. This is the reason why the management crisis consists part of a larger management system of an organization.
Overall, this dissertation intends primarily to analyze the substance of the term “crisis”, while it focuses separately on the management of the crisis at school, by analyzing the stages in managing the crisis while examining the interaction of many factors. Factors like these are the types of the crisis, formed by the criteria of the projection and treatment possibility, the stages of the crisis management between them, the ability of the leader in making decisions in crucial moments, his emotional intelligence, the ability of the team members in making decisions, the formal or informal way of the team’s inner communication and the communicating strategies with the public opinion. The project follows this structure:
The first part of the study is constituted by four chapters.
• In the first chapter is analyzed the significance of crisis and is described the types of crises as they have been registered internationally.
• In the second chapter is analyzed the crisis management and is described its phases as well as its defining factors, as: the leadership in the crisis and the sentimental intelligence of the leader, the teams of crisis management and the crisis communication.
• In the third chapter the importance is given in the “crisis” in the school unit and more specifically in the prediction, the management, the recovery and the utility that we acquire from the crisis experience.
• The second part of the study that constitutes the fourth chapter as well, refers to the incident of terrorist attack that took place in the high school of Columbine in Colorado from two school students, the spring of 1999. The chapter illustrates the incident, analyzes its long-term impact and evaluates the incident’s management.
The dissertation closes with a rigorous record of the international and Greek bibliography and journalism around the subject.
