Autism: From its first steps in the psychiatry fields of 19th century to our days
Summary:
In this paper, the basic steps of development of autism are presented during the 19th and 20th century up to our days. As reference point, we start from the belief that autism was considered as a symptom of schizophrenia which gradually led to its separation from schizophrenia and was finally classified as an individual disorder.
To the above, the researches of Benedict-Augustine Morel, Emil Kraepelin, Bleuler, Asperger and Kanner contributed significantly. Following a presentation of what autism is, what are its symptoms and characteristics, as well as what are its causes and the possible treatment approaches, there are presented the personal stories of three autistic children. In these, it is depicted the way these children understand the world and the importance of the prompt diagnosis of the disorder in combination with role of the family are emphasized.
