Summary:
In the context of the educational institution, as in every form of institution, conflicts are a common phenomenon. The forms of the conflicts as well as the extent of their manifestation vary depending on the circumstances. The causes of conflict are nearly the same for all conflicting parties. Teachers can have difficulty in resolving conflicts amongst them and often require the assistance of the school’s principal. According to the present study, principals appear to be completely satisfied by their contribution, whereas the majority of teachers believe that there is need for improvement. The con-flicts’ consequences can prove to be either positive or negative. What is important for the educational institution’s proper function, which will yield the best outcome, is that conflicts be definitively and peacefully resolved. The effective use of communication by the principal can contribute to this goal. Communication is a complex phenomenon that can have different forms, which ought to be combined for the best management of conflicts. There are various conflict management techniques. With the help of communication, those techniques can be applied to confront problems on a temporary or more permanent basis. Effective communication thus contributes to the resolution of conflicts and conflicts that play a constructive role can promote this kind of com-munication. On the other hand, ineffective conflicts, that usually are not managed us-ing peaceful communication techniques, can have the opposite outcome. The construc-tive resolution of conflicts contributes to the institution’s proper function. The princi-pal’s communicative role in this context is not very satisfying.
