Alzheimer and physical activity
Summary:
A notable and contemporary medical problem is Alzheimer’s disease. Definitely it is a big problem mainly at modern West society, since it affects a lot of people mostly ages of over 60-65 years old. It’s a degenerative disease which of course causes a lot of damages both in intellectual and physical health of people. Such damages are the ones of partially or total dismantling of the central nervous system and the reduction of neural responses to external stimuli. (Popescu et al., 2014).
This thesis describes at first the causes of the disease. The foundation of them has been found to rest on a gene (or genetic factors) and specifically at e4 allele Etnier(2015). That does not necessarily means that if one of our fellow man carries the particular gene he will exhibit the disease too. However it’s an important factor and in any case increases the possibility to manifest its symptoms. Afterwards, the external environment and several contaminants in the atmosphere contribute to the deterioration of intellectual function. The main problem with Alzheimer’s disease is that a diagnosis is difficult to be made. Furthermore the disease’s management costs are high both for the patient’s relatives and general health system, as patients require much care even for their daily duties. (Holthoff et al., 2015).
There is of course the administration of analogous medication regarding the disease this constitutes of several medications and substances. Completely indicative examples include: Donepezil, Rivstigmine, Galantamine and Memantine, as well as vitamins, antioxidants, alpha lipoic acid etc. Medication treatment certainly does not bring back the patient to his prior state of mind, only reduces the intensity and frequency of symptoms. (Alzheimer’s Society, 2015).
The most interesting thing that this thesis revealed is the fact that the combination of exercise and physical activity of any kind may alleviate the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. Of course, when exercise becomes more organized and under the condition of supervision by a qualified professional then the results tend to be even better. In some cases there is a positive correlation between physical activity and mental fitness improvement, so consequentials are the reduction of Alzheimer's symptoms, especially for operators of Etnier e4 gene. Moreover, according to the bibliography, physical activity improves sleep quality, and sleep, in turn, alleviate the symptoms experienced by patients with Alzheimer (McCurry et al, 2011).
